Hyundai Santa Fe EREV Announcement
The Hyundai Santa Fe is about to introduce a new kind of electrified powertrain. Known as an EREV, this groundbreaking technology combines electric propulsion with an onboard gasoline engine designed to extend the SUV’s driving range. Here at MotorWorld Hyundai, we explain how the EREV system works and where it fits among the different electrified vehicles on the market.

EREV vs. EV, Hybrid, and PHEV

With the increasing number of electrified Hyundai models available, the team often receives questions about the differences between them. EREV stands for Extended-Range Electric Vehicle. Its wheels are driven by electric motors, while a gasoline engine serves as a generator that maintains a steady charge. This differs from a conventional Hyundai hybrid, where the gasoline engine can help propel the vehicle.

There are some similarities to a plug-in hybrid vehicle, including a battery that can be charged at an outlet or Level 2 charger, and an onboard gasoline engine. The important difference is the role of the engine, since the EREV engine doesn’t directly power the vehicle. This is also in contrast to an EV, which doesn’t have a gasoline engine at all.

Why is Hyundai Adding EREV Technology?

An EREV vehicle makes sense for drivers who like some aspects of electric driving but remain concerned about charging on longer road trips. Hyundai plans to make the Hyundai Santa Fe its first EREV. The upcoming model is expected to use two electric motors for all-wheel drive and offer more than 600 miles of combined range.
